Compuestos Organometálicos y su potencial terapéutico en el tratamiento del cáncer. Una breve revisión

Según la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS), el cáncer es la segunda causa de muerte a nivel global, y casi una de cada seis defunciones en el mundo se debe a esta enfermedad. Desde la química se hacen esfuerzos por investigar mejores agentes terapéuticos contra el cáncer y los compuestos organometálicos ofrecen una interesante oportunidad, en base al efecto sinérgico entre las propiedades medicinales de los ligantes y las características químicas de los metales de transición. En este artículo se presenta una breve revisión de algunos avances en compuestos organometálicos utilizados en el tratamiento del cáncer. La revisión pone de manifiesto que, pequeños cambios estructurales, se traducen en grandes cambios de la actividad anticancerígena, lo cual genera nuevas posibilidades para quimioterapias más específicas, con menores efectos secundarios y económicamente más asequibles.
