Abstract

Dimethylglyoxime (diacetyl dioxime or butane-2,3-dioxime), dmgH2, is one of the most widely used chelates in coordination and analytical chemistry. The reaction of formation of nickel(II) bis(dimethylglyoximate), reported by Lev A. Chugaev (Tschugaeff) in 1905, constitutes one of the first specific tests for the qualitative identification of a transition metal. Since then, and for more than a century, dimethylglyoxime became important as a remarkable chelating agent, and its complex compounds have been used in areas such as inorganic chemistry, catalysis, electrochemistry, materials science and others areas. In this article, we present a short review of the dimethylglyoxime, of metal dimethylglyoximates and some typical applications. The review indicates that, in addition to its greater success as an analytical reagent for the determination of metals, there exists several studies of metal dimethylglyoximates as catalysts for various reactions, highlighting the production of molecular hydrogen, an important reaction due to its significance in the hydrogen economy and green chemistry.
